Gilgamesh Theatre Group uses magnificent masks, stilts and drummers to bring you the mystery and majesty of the Ivory Coast. Members of this dance and music troupe hail from the diverse nations of Senegal, Guinea, the Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone and Burkino Faso. Blending the diverse flavors of these different locations and cultures, these talented performers come together to create one family bound by their music, artistic creativity and love of West African culture.
Vado Diomande, Guest Artist, has danced since the age of four. While still a teenager he was recruited by the Ballet National de Cote d’Ivoire (National Ballet of the Ivory Coast). During his over fifteen years with the Ballet National, he both performed and choreographed, mastering the over sixty different regional dance and drumming traditions of his native Ivory Coast, as well as other nearby West African countries. The most spectacular of these traditional dances is the stilt dance featuring Gue-Pelou, God of the Sacred Forest.
Gilgamesh Theatre Group is pleased and proud to showcase this Master Artist for this special free performance.
Our programming is funded in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
